You just lost a customer over ten cents. All I needed was 10 copies of one page. The price for the service is 9 cents per page. But you installed that cash card machine that only takes even dollar amounts and won't take plain old cash anymore. On the surface, that machine might seem to be a convenience for the customer and a cost cutter for the store since neither now have to bother with employees interacting with customers. But I did notice in order to use the machine, I have to overload the card with money that you promise I can spend anywhere else in the store. Clever. For you. For me? Yes, I noticed that requires I give you money up front, money I may prefer to spend elsewhere but you've already got it so it doesn't matter if someone else has a better deal or I am conveniently in front of a competitor. You've already got my money, sitting there earning you interest but just tied up for me. Brilliant on your end, but oh so offensive in it's effect on me. Thank you for helping me make a decision. I am now planning to purchase a nice printer with copy capabilities. From one of your competitors.
With utmost sincerity from a former customer,
Chris
What?? Mine only charged for the copies I made. Did I miss something? Wow! I'd be pissed too.

I adore having copy functions on my printer (not to mention scanning and faxing and photo printing). It's the best money I ever spent.

The issue is the only payment they accept for the self serve copy machine is a cash card, which you can "conveniently" get by inserting dollar bills of assorted denomination into the machine parked next to the self copier. Because they use a cash machine that only takes bills and not coins, you have to over load the card. In my case, it would have been ten cents extra. Sure, I could use the last ten cents on the card towards payment for anything else in the store, but I was on short time, just wanted my 10 copies and outta there. What are the chances I'm going to remember that card next time, maybe next month, I'll need something from Staples? Or even be able to find it. I'm su Ire money paid but never used is part of what they are counting on. So it's not the 10 cents that pissed me off. It's the apparent manipulative deception.

Like Mail-in rebates, these companies count on people not carrying through!
