And the horse show happened under beautiful blue skies, just enough cool in the air to keep the horses comfy. All the rain in the days leading up to the show, though, meant no turn out for the horses and - well - the first few classes were exciting but not because they won. No, buckin' broncs do not get awards in equitation classes. Lucy, my trainer, and I had planned to bring CC not to show but just to acquaint her with the environment. But with all the yeeee ha from the trained horses going on, I decided that wasn't quite the attitude I want CC to learn, so she stayed home. I did walk her through the woods to the show grounds on Saturday when the other horses went for practice. CC has never walked through woods before. She was a bit snorty, and danced around in excitement but settled in for a munch fest once she discovered the show grounds sported acres of good green grass. I did not participate in the show either, though Lucy wanted me to. It was enough for me to watch. The pair to watch was Jess and Maggie. Maggie is the 18 year old Morab mare who can do it all and would rather not. She is the horse I ride in my lessons. She's a character who has humans figured out. Most of us are to be ignored. Go forward? I don't think so. But Jess is a little 11 year old dynamo in the saddle. She rode Maggie in at least 10 classes and brought out the mare's best. The two of them took division championship at the end of the day. Well deserved.
One class that always captures my attention is the Arabian Native Costume Class. According to arabianhorses.org "Mounted Native Costume horses are shown at a walk, canter and hand gallop
both ways of the ring. The bridle may consist of bit, hackamore or any suitable
headstall. No martingales or tie downs are permitted. The rider's attire is of
native, Bedouin type. Flowing capes, coats, pantaloons, head dresses,
scarfs,
sashes and any other decorations in keeping with a colorful desert regalia are
allowed, with safety remaining of utmost importance. All divisions of this class
are judged 75% performance and manners and 25% on appointments." I love the pagentry. How authentic are the costumes? I dunno. Fun to watch, though.
Kiri enjoyed the day, too.
